Apply for a passport digitally: Austria is simplifying the application process for citizens and Austrians living abroad with a new online platform starting in 2026.

Austria is declaring war on bureaucracy – more comprehensively than ever before: with a 114-point package, the federal government wants to reduce costs for companies by billions, relieve the burden on citizens, and modernize public authorities.

Among other things, the government wants to expand the “Digital Consulate” – a project that will primarily benefit the approximately 600,000 Austrians living abroad. The aim is to create a secure and uniform platform through which passports can be applied for digitally in the future.

Instead of paper forms, personal appointments, and lengthy administrative procedures, applications will be processed online, efficiently, and in compliance with data protection regulations – at no additional cost to the budget.

According to the federal government, the goal is to create a uniform, secure, and data protection-compliant digital platform to enable consular activities to be carried out more efficiently.

In addition, existing consular processes are to be optimized and digitized as much as possible throughout the entire administrative process without placing an additional burden on the budget.

Citizens should receive high-quality, but also fast and efficient services in a secure environment. The process of applying for a passport at an Austrian embassy is to be simplified.

Until now, this has required personal appointments, the submission of physical original documents, and manual processing. In the future, this is to be mainly made digital, unbureaucratic, and thus considerably faster.

When applying for a new passport, it will also no longer be necessary to present the original documents each time if the documents are already available in digital form.

With the measures taken to reduce bureaucracy, the government wants to make contact with the authorities as easy and unproblematic as possible for citizens in Austria.
